Social Secretary Gretchen Poston and Chef Henry Haller

This photograph of White House Social Secretary Gretchen Poston with White House Executive Chef Henry Haller was taken around December 13, 1979. As social secretary to First Lady Rosalynn Carter, Poston was responsible for coordinating events at the White House. Her knowledge of the guest's tastes could then be imparted into Chef Haller's kitchen, such as during the State Dinner for Prime Minister Masayoshi Ōhira of Japan on May 2, 1979, when Haller included barbecue on the menu due to Poston's discovery that the prime minister had always wanted to try it. This photograph is part of a collection belonging to former White House Executive Chef Henry Haller. Haller served five first families and their distinguished guests as executive chef at the White House from 1966-1987.
